For my blog this week I am giving you a homework assignment: see the movie "Food Inc." It's not in theaters but you can find it on video, or I am sure it is "On-Demand," we rented ours from the local library (for free). The obvious question might be what does this have to do with faith? It is by no means a biblical movie, it does not talk about Jesus or the Bible but it does talk about how we are called to live with the world that God has created for us.
Unfortunately greed is destroying us and our world and it has become a silent partner in the food industry and we are the ones paying the price. At times being ignorant seems like the easy way out but when our ignorance leads to corruption and injustice we as Christians are called to act. As the body of Christ we are called to care for our brothers and sisters regardless of their ethnicity and economic status. Someone recently challenged the church's connection with social justice and I cant think of a more important issue for the church to be a part of. We must expose sin so that God's light may shine in that darkness. As hard as it is we need to educate ourselves into the darkness that is around us.
PLEASE!!! see this movie and when you do let me know what you think, I am curious to see how this movie effects you.

Hi Chris,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the homework. Here is the link to the first of the 10 segments on youtube.

I appreciate what the video presents. The images used to sell the food are still all about the agrarian American myth. The spinning of the pastoral fantasy.
In the meat isle there are no longer bones on the shelf. The industry does not want you to know where the food comes from. Because if you knew the truth you might want to eat it.
Humm, let me think about this. Food now comes from enormous assembly lines where the animals and the workers are being abused. The food has become much more dangerous in ways that are being deliberately hidden from us.
So are you implying that the corporate feel good church in our country is like the multinational corporate agri businesses and the word of god, the food, has been processed, packaged, and sanitized so we only get what looks and tastes good despite the fact what we are consuming has limited nutritional spiritual value?
The theme in this video that was most powerful for me was how much is hidden and on such a massive scale. It also is of interest that most people do not care to know. The correlation with the greater church body and faith is profound to me.
They use the term lift the fail from what has been hidden. I like that. I find comfort in the fact that when we have our own little gardens that we invest time in we can eat healthy food.
Yours in Christ
Thank you for your comments.
