I have a coffee mug that has about two dozen names that could answer that question. Each one is good. . .and each one is not quite enough.
I remember when I was a freshman at college. I went to my religion professor after a particularly mind-boggling lecture. I had one question. "Who is Jesus?" I don't remember his answer because he went on for about a half hour with metaphysical, eschatological, soteriological mumbo jumbo.
I ended up as a religion major and before I graduated, I went back to this same prof (who was my advisor) and asked him again, "Before I leave the place, I just want to be sure who Jesus is. Who is he?" To his credit, he gave the same half hour mumbo jumbo. To my lack of credit, I still didn't understand him.
This Sunday at church, we will read Matthew 16 in which Jesus asks that same question, "Who do you say that I am?" Not your parents or your church or your pastor or your religion prof, but you. Who do you say that I am?
I would like to hear from you. Give me a one or two sentence answer. If it takes more than that, consider becoming a religion prof! I'll use the best on Sunday (anonymously).
Peace,
Pastor Scott

He's my friend that was never too busy to sit with me in the waiting room during countless medical tests for my wife.
ReplyDeleteHe is the most complete and loving Father you could ever wish for...
ReplyDeleteJesus is God's Spirit in a glorified body, having lived his first 33 years in a physical body, showing us how to have a relationship with God, and making that possible after he was gone. He makes me think of the relationship my children have with their father who they cuddle up with in so much love, who they turn to when they are sad or can't sleep, who they go to for advice, who is their friend and coach they punch in the arm, BUT who is quiet and patient and VERY SCARY when they have done something wrong.
ReplyDeleteWho is Jesus?
ReplyDeleteJesus is my Lord, my comforter, my protector and my guide. Although I daily forsake Him in the loss of my temper, or in wanting things MY way, He never forsakes me.
He loves me, when I am utterably unlovable. He comforts me like no other can. His peace comes down on me when my heart and mind are troubled. He brings light into my darkness. He gives me calm and stillness when my world dissolves in chaos. My cries of pain are songs to His ears.
He shields and protects me from dangers of which I am not even aware. He sends His Spirit to guide me when the decisions are demanding. When I desire to stray, He gently corrects me. And if I still don’t listen, He sends a greater and sometimes, harsher prompting to get my attention because He desires all of His flock to be with Him.
He is the giver of every gift in my life. He gave me the greatest gift ever: His death on a cross, so that despite MY sins, and My wayward life, I might one day, be able to be in His Almighty and Glorious Presence.
